Given the current situation I am still able to capture your registry office wedding beautifully whilst adhering to social distancing protocols. I always photograph the portraits outside using some of the loveliest areas of Dublin that are close by, the Grand Canal and Georgian Dublin. I use a portrait lens so technically I have to be at least 3 metres from the subject to achieve focus. I always capture a wedding in a natural and unobtrusive way so I never need to touch or interfere in a scene.

2021 Registry Office Wedding

If you are planning a 2021 registry office wedding and you like my style please drop me a line. I would love to hear about your wedding plans. These are some of my favourite registry office wedding photographs from recent years. Registry office weddings are my speciality. One of my most favourite locations in Dublin to photograph a wedding.

My Creative Approach

After graduating from The National College of Art and Design I emigrated to New York where I worked as a photojournalist with The New York Times for 7 years. When I returned to Dublin I brought the same approach for photographing a newspaper story to wedding photography.

With all my weddings I bring a calm, natural, artistic and unobtrusive approach. Primarily I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss. Couples really appreciate this.

The most beautiful parts of Dublin are only a couples of minutes from the registry office. Georgian Dublin, the banks of the Grand Canal and Merrion Square Park. Having photographed over 50 registry office weddings I am very familiar with this part of Dublin. I have a nice route that I have formulated over the years. And of course any other locations in town a couple would like to go to. This approach makes the bride and groom feel like they are taking a nice walk through Dublin on their wedding day.. Not feel like they were posing for wedding photographs.

The majority of couples I work with do not like having their photograph taken. I do not like having my own photograph taken so I understand how people feel. Despite this couples always tell me that my approach actually made them enjoy the experience. They found it fun and relaxing and added to their happy memories of the day rather than take away from them.

During the first registry office wedding I ever photographed I came up with the idea to do the group portrait of the guest stand on the lock crossing the canal. The photographs from this perspective looks like paintings. Guests also find it a lot of fun and it adds to the experience of the day.

Your Registry Office Wedding

Normally I am at the Registry Office 30 minutes before the bride and groom and guests to photograph everyone arriving. The ceremony I photograph in as natural and unobtrusive way as possible. After that everyone heads up to the lock on the canal. It is only 4 minutes away. We then do the different family pictures on the banks of the canal. Family and friends are then free to go on to the reception venue.

Again all these locations are just suggestions and we can go anywhere else in Dublin.

I then set off on the route I have agreed with the couple beforehand around Dublin. Any guests who would like to come along on the walk are also welcome. The more the merrier. Especially for a destination wedding it is a lovely way for guests to see the city. Sometimes it becomes a guided tour through Georgian Dublin.

We usually walk as far as Merrion Square. Though we often walk as far as St. Stephen’s Green and Grafton Street. A taxi from Merrion Square to town also is an option to get in as many locations as possible.

What If It’s Raining?

In the 15 years I have been photographing weddings there has only been one wedding where it has rained all day. There is always a break in the weather. I have photographed numerous weddings in the rain and have a strategy to get all the pictures and you will not be able to tell it is raining.

The canal and around at Merrion Square have a lot of tree coverage allowing to get the pictures without getting wet. A bride I recently worked with bought an umbrella that matched her dress. It really added a sense of style to the photographs rather than take away from them. It was only needed for a few minutes anyway.

St. Stephen’s Green, the National Library and National Gallery also provide a lot of coverage. It is also an option to take a taxi to this area of town to do the pictures. The natural beauty of Stephen’s Green and the beautiful architecture of the Kildare Street area will still tell a lovely story of your day and a sense of Dublin despite the rain.
