Registry Office Weddings
I have specialized in Registry Office Weddings for over 15 years. I love photographing weddings at one of my favourite locations in Dublin. This venue is surrounded by beautiful locations for wedding photographs. Here are some of my favourite registry office photography from recent years.
My Creative Approach To Registry Office Weddings
I always like to provide a sense of story and place in my registry office wedding photographs. Over the years I have formulated a nice route. Talking in the banks of the Grand Canal, Georgian Dublin, and Merrion Square Park.
Such an approach makes the bride and groom feel like they are taking a nice walk through Dublin on their wedding day. Therefore they do not feel like they are posing for wedding photographs. It also creates a nice story of the day, and I like to keep couples’ wedding photographs as natural and unposed as possible.
I also came up with the idea a few years ago to do the group portrait of the guests standing on the Locks crossing the canal. The scene presents a painterly quality and offers an unusual angle. It is also only three minutes from the registry office, making it convenient for everyone to walk up to it. The banks of the canal beside the lock also provide a lovely place for family pictures. All in all, it takes around 15 minutes. Then, the guests can go on to the reception venue.
The Walk-Through Georgian Dublin
I then set out with the bride and groom on the route along the canal, through Georgian Dublin to Merrion Square Park. This takes around 30 minutes. Couples tell me that the walk added to the happy memories of their day. Rather than taking away from it. A bride recently told me “We all had a wonderful time with sincere thanks for your warmth and professionalism throughout the day. Given that it was such a small group the photography session really ‘made a day out of it’ and gave us some justification for getting dressed up!” Trudy Duffy
What If It’s Raining?
I have photographed a number of weddings in the rain so I have a backup plan for locations. That said, it has only happened on a few occasions and 98% of the time the weather behaves itself. In the 15 years I have been photographing weddings there has only been one wedding where it has rained all day. There is always a break in the weather.
On the few occasions it rained we were still able to get all the photographs with a few changes to locations. We can still do the group portion on the canal. Everyone can put their umbrellas up for one picture, like a parasol. Then take them down quickly so I can get that picture. So you will have both versions. There is good tree coverage on the banks of the canal to do the family pictures.
Locations For A Rainy Day
If the weather isn’t ideal, I often head to St. Stephen’s Green with the couple. The park has wonderful tree coverage throughout the year, offering plenty of sheltered spots while still providing a beautiful natural backdrop for photographs.
Just a short walk away are some of Dublin’s most iconic landmarks, including The National Library, Trinity College, and The National Museum. Their stunning architecture provides elegant and timeless settings, adding another layer of character and storytelling to the day. These locations allow us to create a varied gallery while still capturing the unmistakable feel of Dublin.
I remember one wedding where rain was forecast, and the bride bought a white umbrella that perfectly matched her dress. Rather than taking away from the day, it became part of the story and added a lovely sense of charm and personality to the photographs.
There are plenty of alternative options around the city centre that work beautifully in all kinds of weather. We can still capture that authentic Dublin atmosphere while staying dry, relaxed, and making the most of our time together. These are simply a few suggestions, and if a couple has any favourite locations or other preferences around the city, I’m always happy to tailor the plan to suit them.
“I Do Not Like Having My Photograph Taken”
Many couples say this to me. I don’t like having my photograph taken either, so I completely understand how you feel. Somehow, people soon relax in front of my camera. I can’t explain exactly why, but I believe a photographer’s personality makes all the difference. Before long, the camera fades into the background, and the experience starts to feel natural.
Most couples tell me they really enjoyed the portrait session. They often arrive feeling nervous. Those nerves soon disappear. A relaxed walk through Dublin helps everyone feel at ease. It also gives you a chance to enjoy a few quiet moments together on your wedding day.
