Dublin City Hall Wedding

It was a lovely day in September for Siobhan and Dave’s Dublin City Hall Wedding. Siobhan and Dave chose me to photograph their city hall wedding for my style. I like to photograph a wedding in a natural and unobtrusive manner. Primarily I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss. This was just what they were looking for. The majority of people who choose me to photograph their wedding are a little camera shy. So my approach really suits people who do not like having their photograph taken.

The Wedding Day

I always like to give a sense of Dublin to city centre weddings. The setting of City Hall and Dublin Castle nearby make for lovely backdrops for wedding photographs. The settings also add to the story of the day. I met with Siobhan and her bridal party at the North Star Hotel. The getting-ready pictures also add to the story of the day. Rarely do I do any posed pictures at this point of the day unless requested. Blending into the background and photograph everything as it is happening.

I headed in the direction of City Hall and went across the road to The Oak. Dave and his groomsman having a quick pint and to capture the old-world charm of The Oak. There was also a twist to the tale of the day. Siobhan had hired a horse and carriage to bring herself and her father to City Hall. As it happened there was a parade and protest in Dublin that afternoon. The Quays and Dame Street were blocked to all traffic. All routes to City Hall were closed. An Garda Síochána came to the rescue and gave Siobhan and her father a motorbike escort through the city. The staff at City Hall said this was a first and had never seen such a thing before. A great photograph it made coming up Parliament Street.

My Creative Approach To A City Hall Wedding

It was a beautiful wedding ceremony in the City Hall Atrium. One of the loveliest backdrop for wedding photographs in Dublin. There are also plenty of columns I can stand between so I am not visible during the ceremony. After the ceremony, we did the family pictures in the city hall. I also try to keep these as natural-looking as possible and incorporated the beautiful architecture of City Hall. There is an area by the side door of City Hall with an overhead view from the staircase that makes for the perfect spot for a group photograph.

I then brought Siobhan and Dave for a walk around the grounds of Dublin Castle for the bridal photographs. They did not feel like they were posing for wedding photographs but taking a nice walk together after being married. Dublin Castle grounds are also a lovely compliment to the City Hall wedding photographs. It all took only 10 minutes. So Siobhan and Dave did not miss any of their Fallon & Byrne wedding reception.

What If It’s Raining?

City Hall is one of the few venues in Dublin where you don’t have to worry about the weather on your wedding day. The beautiful interiors architecture of Dublin City Hall make for the loveliest backdrops to wedding photographs. So I always like to make the most of it. 

If it does rain get some outside pictures to add to the story of your City Hall wedding. After the pictures in City Hall, I usually go over to Dublin Castle with the couple. There are plenty of covered areas in the grounds of the castle. Whilst remaining dry and still adding the beautiful architecture as a backdrop to your City Hall wedding photography. 

That said 98% of the time the weather behaves itself. In the 15 years I have been photographing weddings there has only been one wedding where it has rained all day. There is always a break in Irish weather.

Social Distancing

Importantly it is possible to capture your City Hall wedding beautifully whilst adhering to social distancing.Since I use a portrait lens so I have to be at least 3 metres from the subject to achieve focus. Capturing a wedding in a natural way, I never need to touch or interfere in a scene.

Registry Office Weddings

I have specialized in Registry Office Weddings for over 15 years. I love photographing weddings at one of my favourite locations in Dublin. This venue is surrounded by beautiful locations for wedding photographs. Here are some of my favourite registry office photography from recent years.

My Creative Approach To Registry Office Weddings

I always like to provide a sense of story and place in registry office wedding photographs. Over the years I have formulated a nice route. Talking in the banks of the Grand Canal, Georgian Dublin, and Merrion Square Park.

Such an approach makes the bride and groom feel like they are taking a nice walk through Dublin on their wedding day. Therefore they do not feel like they are posing for wedding photographs. It also creates a nice story of the day, and I like to keep couples’ wedding photographs as natural and unposed as possible.

I also came up with the idea a few years ago to do the group portrait of the guests standing on the Locks crossing the canal. The scene presents a painterly quality and offers an unusual angle. It is also only three minutes from the registry office, making it convenient for everyone to walk up to it. The banks of the canal beside the lock also provide a lovely place for family pictures. All in all, it takes around 15 minutes. Then, the guests can go on to the reception venue.

The Walk-Through Georgian Dublin

I then set out with the bride and groom on the route along the canal, through Georgian Dublin to Merrion Square Park. This takes around 30 minutes. Couples tell me that the walk added to the happy memories of their day. Rather than taking away from it. A bride recently told me “We all had a wonderful time with sincere thanks for your warmth and professionalism throughout the day. Given that it was such a small group the photography session really ‘made a day out of it’ and gave us some justification for getting dressed up!”  Trudy Duffy

What If It’s Raining?

I have photographed a number of weddings in the rain so I have a backup plan for locations. That said, it has only happened on a few occasions and 98% of the time the weather behaves itself. In the 15 years I have been photographing weddings there has only been one wedding where it has rained all day. There is always a break in the weather.

On the few occasions it rained we were still able to get all the photographs with a few changes to locations. We can still do the group portion on the canal. Everyone can put their umbrellas up for one picture, like a parasol. Then take them down quickly so I can get that picture. So you will have both versions. There is good tree coverage on the banks of the canal to do the family pictures. 

Locations For A Rainy Day

Then I go to St. Stephen’s Green with the couple. There is lots of good tree coverage there at all times of year. Close by is The National Library, Trinity College and The National Museum has beautiful architectural coverage to add to the story of the day. 

When rain was forecast, a bride once bought a white umbrella that matched her dress. It thus added to the story and charm of the pictures. 

So there are a lot of alternative options around the city centre. Still getting that nice sense of Dublin in the pictures. Whilst remaining dry and still enjoying the time. These are just ideas and of course if a couple has any other preferences around town.  

“I Do Not Like Having My Photograph Taken”

This is something I always hear from couples. I do not like having my photograph taken myself so I understand how you feel. To be honest I do not know how I do it but couples always feel very comfortable being being photographed by me. It just comes naturally and I think it is all to do with a photographers personality.

Couples always tell me they ended up really enjoying the portrait session. Despite their initial nerves they were surprised how nice it was. Walking through Dublin makes the process very pleasant. A nice stroll through the city on your wedding day.

Trinity College Wedding

Katy and Adrian chose me to photograph their Trinity College wedding as I like to photograph a wedding in a natural and unobtrusive manner and this was the style they were looking for.

I feel that brides look at their most beautiful on their wedding day when a photographer can manage to blend into the background and they do that feel like there are being photographed.

The guests also look at their very best when they do not feel like they have to pose for photographs. Primarily I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss which I find couples really appreciate.

I always like to give a sense of story and place to a couple’s wedding photographs. The grounds of Trinity College and Trinity College Chapel make for lovely backdrops for wedding photographs. It also gives a nice sense of Dublin to the story of the day.

 Creative Approach

Katy arrived in a lovely vintage car to be married and was cheered by visiting tourists. After a beautiful wedding ceremony in Trinity College Chapel I photographed the group portrait on the steps of the chapel. It showcased the wedding guests and Trinity architecture both beautifully.

I then photographed Katy and Adrian walking through the grounds of Trinity. This made them feel like they were taking a nice walk through their Alma mater on their wedding day. Therefore they did not like they were posing for wedding photographs.

The rose garden in Trinity makes for a nice quiet spot for the family pictures which I always like to make as natural looking as possible. I achieve this by asking the guests to walk towards the camera, it gives people something to do so the photographs do not look stiff and I find it makes people smile of their own accord.

I came up with this idea on the very first wedding I ever photographed to make the pictures more contemporary and natural. It was then to The Weston Hotel for a beautiful wedding reception.

Most importantly Katy and Adrian were delighted with their wedding photographs. This is also the most rewarding part of wedding photography for me. They also remarked that the guests said that they hardly noticed me working on the day. I was very happy to hear that and it is what I like to achieve.

Royal Hospital Kilmainham Wedding

Jane and Enda’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham Wedding took place on a lovely Autumn day. Photographing an IMMA wedding is a pleasure. I strive to give my wedding photographs a sense of place and story. The Royal Hospital, with its beautiful surroundings, is one of the most perfect locations in Dublin for achieving this.

I chose to photograph the majority of Jane and Enda’s wedding candidly in order to capture the atmosphere of the day naturally and unobtrusively. As I believe that on their wedding day, when they are not posed, brides look their most beautiful.

During Jane and Enda’s wedding, I had the opportunity to capture some beautiful moments as they strolled through the walled gardens and courtyards of IMMA. My technique allowed them to feel at ease, as if they were simply enjoying a pleasant walk on their special day.

For the family pictures, I selected the main courtyard as a backdrop. Ensuring that the setting looked natural and beautiful. To achieve this, I came up with the idea of asking the guests to walk towards the camera during the portrait session. Not only did it give them something to do, but it also resulted in genuine smiles.

Hibernian Club Wedding

I always like to give a sense of place and story to my wedding photographs. So I was delighted to photograph Anne and Lyndon’s Hibernian Club wedding. The architecture of our beautiful city makes for the loveliest backdrops for wedding photographs.

The ceremony was in Trinity College Chapel and wedding reception at the St. Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club.

Trinity College Chapel and The Hibernian Club provide the perfect places to give a sense of Dublin. The locations give a sense of history and character to the wedding photographs. The Billiard Room at The Hibernian Club makes for a beautiful backdrop for the family portraits. It has beautiful natural light and is also wide enough for me to do my “walking shot”.

 Wedding Photography Creative Approach

I ask people to walk towards the camera for the portrait session. I find it gives people something to do and I find it makes everyone smile of their own accord. The idea came to me at the very first wedding I ever photographed. It makes the pictures more contemporary and natural.

I photographed the majority of Anne and Lyndon’s wedding candidly to capture the atmosphere of the day in a natural and unobtrusive manner. So they both really appreciated this.

Firstly I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss. Anne and Lyndon were delighted with their wedding photographs. They thought they looked very natural and captured the spirit of their day. A happy couple is one of the most rewarding part of wedding photography for me.

MoLI Wedding

This was my first Moli wedding. So I was delighted when Deirdre and Michael asked me to photograph their day. I love the Moli Museum, so I thought it would be really interesting  to photograph a weddings in the Museum Of Literature Ireland. 

For city center weddings, I always strive to incorporate a sense of Dublin into the photographs. The stunning backdrop of Moli and the nearby St. Stephen’s Green provide the perfect setting for capturing beautiful wedding moments. It truly is one of the most exquisite venues in the heart of Dublin for a wedding.

The Wedding Venue

The Old Physics Theatre is where wedding ceremonies are held, with a private entrance for your wedding guests located at No. 85 St Stephen’s Green. Inside, you’ll find hand-made wallpaper, a magnificent chandelier, and beautiful high arched windows that overlook the gardens, flooding the room with natural light. Additionally, the adjoining Saloon is available for your drinks reception, showcasing one of the most spectacular Georgian interiors in Dublin.

My Creative Approach

In an effort to maintain a natural appearance, I strive to make my photographs as unobtrusive as possible. Following a beautiful ceremony in the Old Physics Theatre, we ventured outside to capture some images in the gardens. Unfortunately, the rain began to fall, limiting our time for outdoor photography. Thankfully, the interiors of MoLi provided us with numerous stunning backdrops. Once we finished taking family pictures indoors, we made our way to BANG Restaurant. Fortunately, the rain had ceased, allowing us to stroll through St. Stephen’s Green and capture more memorable wedding photos.

Registry Office Wedding

Registry Office Wedding. Vicki and Alan celebrated their registry office wedding on a lovely day in Dublin. They traveled from Scotland to get married at the Registry Office. I aimed to capture a nice sense of the city in their wedding photographs, especially since some of Dublin’s loveliest parts are nearby. I also enjoy taking couples along a specific route after their registry office ceremony, which includes the banks of the Grand Canal, Georgian Dublin, and concludes at Merrion Square Park.

I photographed Vikki and Alan as they were walking through this part of the city. Thus, they felt like they were taking a nice walk through Dublin on their wedding day. Not like they were posing for wedding photographs. I like to photograph a registry office wedding in a natural manner. Brides look at their most beautiful when they do not have to worry about posing.

Wedding guests look at their very best when they do not feel like someone is photographing them. The experience resembled a guided tour of Georgian Dublin. The photography was relaxing and enjoyable, providing a sense of story and place. We wrapped up the photography session at O’Donoghue’s on Baggot Street. Alan and Vikki wanted to enjoy a nice pint of Guinness in a traditional Irish pub.

Wedding Photographer Waterford

As a wedding photographer based in Waterford, I bring over 20 years of experience to the table, capturing stunning, candid moments for couples. Here’s a glimpse into the weddings I have had the pleasure of photographing throughout the years.

I recently moved to Waterford, and since my family hails from Dungarvan, the southeast has always held a cherished spot in my heart from my childhood summers. I’m thrilled to be living here now.

Creative Approach

My focus is on natural, unobtrusive wedding photography. I believe that brides appear most radiant when they aren’t instructed to pose throughout the entire day. While I provide gentle guidance for essential family and bridal portraits, the majority of my work involves capturing couples as they enjoy their special day.

Most individuals who select me to capture their wedding are not fond of being photographed. I can relate to their feelings, as I also dislike having my picture taken. Nevertheless, couples consistently express that they ultimately found joy in the entire experience of having their wedding photos taken, overcoming their initial apprehensions.

People claim it turned out to be quite enjoyable, enhancing the day instead of detracting from the memories they created.

 I’m unsure of how I manage it; it simply feels instinctive. I possess a knack for putting people at ease. My goal is to keep the process uncomplicated, as I’m aware of all the essential photographs to capture. Ultimately, I strive to ensure that the photography seamlessly integrates into your day without causing any disruption.

The sole occasion when you need to be concerned about my presence is during the bridal and family portraits. I’ll be providing a few brief instructions while aiming to keep the process as swift as possible, ensuring that you don’t miss out on valuable moments with your wedding party. For the remainder of the day, my approach will be documentary-style wedding photography.

To capture images of the bride and groom, I usually guide them on a stroll around the venue. This approach allows the couple to enjoy a pleasant walk following their marriage, rather than feeling as though they are posing for wedding photos.

On this lovely spring day, I met with Sarah at her house to do the getting ready pictures. This I find can be some of the nicest of the day. I never ask people to pose so I always photograph the getting-ready pictures naturally. I just photograph what is happening at the house.

The neighbours and friends gathered at the house to wish the bride well and see her dress, These are very charming pictures of the day. It was then off to the registry office for a lovely wedding ceremony.

After Sarah and Keith were married I set off with the guests to the lock across the canal for the group photograph.  Guests always find a lot of fun.  It is not your typical group shot angle and everyone always seems to enjoy it.

We then did the family pictures on the banks of the canal. There I also try to make as natural looking as possible. This all went very quickly and then the guests could go off to the reception venue.  I set off with Sarah & Keith on the route we had agreed upon.

I really just photographed Sarah and Keith walking around Georgian Dublin and the canal on their way to the wedding reception. It was relaxing and fun, I like to keep it easy and not make a fuss.

A beautiful summer’s day for Sarah and Declan’s Carlingford Wedding. I always like to give a sense of story and place to my wedding photographs. Carlingford makes for a perfect backdrop to wedding photographs. I photographed the majority of Sarah and Declan’s wedding candidly.

Therefore to capture the atmosphere of the day in a natural and unobtrusive manner which they both really appreciated. Primarily I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss.

I met with Sarah and her wedding party at The Four Season Hotel to photograph the bridal preparations. If you are photographing a wedding in a documentary style are always a nice part of the story.

I photographed all the preparations candidly. I find you capture nicer moments if people are relaxed and do not feel like they have to pose. It was then on to The Carlingford Heritage Centre for a lovely wedding ceremony in a beautiful setting.

After the ceremony, I set off with Sarah and Declan to take pictures around the town. I had visited Carlingford about a month before the wedding. I planned out a route for the walk taking in the mediaeval streets.

The Tholsel, the remains of Dominican Friary and down to Carlingford Lough is a lovely route. Finding nice backdrops is always one of your primary concerns as a wedding photographer. In Carlingford, you have a load of choices.

I primarily photographed the couple walking through the town of Carlingford. It was like they were taking a nice walk on their wedding day and not posing for photographs.

It took about 30 minutes so Sarah and Declan did not miss too much of their wedding party. We arrived back at The Four Season Hotel Carlingford for a lovely wedding reception. The Four Season gardens were a nice spot for the family pictures.

Sarah and Declan were delighted with their photographs. It is always one of the most rewarding parts of wedding photography for me.

City Hall Wedding

City Hall Wedding. It was a lovely Spring day in Dublin for Amy and Oliver’s Dublin City Hall Wedding. Amy and Oliver chose me to photograph their city hall wedding for my style. I like to photograph a wedding in a natural and unobtrusive manner. This was just what they were looking for. I find that most people who choose me to photograph their wedding do not like having their photograph taken. So my approach really suits people who are a little camera shy.

My Creative Approach To A City Hall Wedding

I like to think people also feel very comfortable working with me so they actually end up enjoying. I also feel that brides look at their most beautiful on their wedding day. Especially when you photograph them in a natural way. Hopefully, they do that feel like there are being photographed. The guests also look at their very best when they do not feel like they have to pose for photographs. Firstly I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss which I find couples really appreciate.

I always like to give a sense of story and place to a couple’s wedding photographs. The setting of City Hall and Dublin Castle nearby make for lovely backdrops for wedding photographs. It also gives a nice sense of Dublin to the story of the day. I met with Amy at her family home for the getting ready pictures. These pictures are always a nice addition to the story of the day. I never do any posed pictures at the house. I just blend into the background and photograph what is happening. We all then travelled onto City Hall for the wedding. There were some lovely pictures of Amy arriving with her Father and walking along Dame Street. The view down Parliament Street is always a lovely vista for photographs.

The Wedding Day

It was a beautiful wedding ceremony in the City Hall Atrium. It also makes for a lovely backdrop for the city hall wedding photographs. After the ceremony, we did the family pictures in the city hall. I also try to keep these as natural looking as possible and incorporated the beautiful architecture of City Hall. There is also a nice area by the side door of City Hall with an overhead view from the staircase. This makes for the perfect spot for a group photograph.

I then brought Amy and Oliver for a walk around the grounds of Dublin Castle for the bridal photographs.. Amy and Oliver felt like they are taking a nice walk through Dublin on their wedding day. So they did not feel like they were posing for wedding photographs. The grounds of Dublin Castle are also a lovely compliment to the City Hall wedding photographs. It all took only 10 minutes. So Amy and Oliver did not miss too much of their Morrison Hotel wedding reception. Amy and Oliver were delighted with their wedding photographs. This is always one of the most rewarding part of wedding photography for me.

 No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place Wedding

A lovely spring day for Jean and Jolis No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place Wedding in Dublin. Jean and Jolis choose me as their wedding photographer. They were looking for someone to photograph their day in a natural and unobtrusive way.

So this is my style and how I like to work. Firstly I like to keep things simple and not make a fuss. Couples really appreciate this as they do not have to worry about posing for photographs.

I also like to give a sense of story and place to a couple’s wedding photography. Therefore No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place makes for a beautiful setting for wedding photography and there is Georgian Dublin on the doorstep.

After a wedding lovely wedding ceremony we all then set off on a route I have planned out for pictures. It was very near No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place. It took in the banks of the Grand Canal, Georgian Dublin and Wilton Place Park.

So this made Jean and Jolis feel like they are taking a nice walk through Georgian Dublin on their wedding day. They did not feel like they were posing for wedding photographs. It also adds a nice element to the story of the day. It only took about 20 minutes so Jean and Jolis did not miss too much of their wedding party.

We returned to No. 25 Fitzwilliam Place. The front of the building made for a nice spot for a group picture of all the guests. It was a little cold to do all the family pictures outside. However there is a lovely room upstairs that was perfect for the family pictures. Above all Jean and Jolis were delighted with their photographs. I always find the most rewarding part of wedding photography.

A Lovely Conyngham Arms Hotel Wedding

The historic village of Slane is a lovely place to photograph a wedding. I always like to give a sense of place and story to my wedding photographs. Slane is one of the most perfect places in Meath for this with all it’s beautiful surroundings.

The Conyngham Arms Hotel is an 18th Century coaching inn that is beautifully restored and transformed into one of the most well-loved venues set in the heart of historic Slane village, surrounded by culture and heritage.

A memorable venue deserves only the best wedding photography.

It was a lovely summer’s day for Deirdre and Donal’s Fallon and Byrne wedding. Primarily I like to photograph a wedding in a natural and unobtrusive way. To keep things simple and not make a fuss. Deirdre and Donal chose me for this reason. In particular they were looking for natural wedding photographs.

We started the wedding photographs in St. Stephen’s Green before the ceremony. Firstly photographing Deirdre and Donal walking through the park. Thus they felt like they were taking a nice walk on their wedding day. As a result, they did not feel like they were posing for wedding photographs.

After we met with both their families at the bandstand in St. Stephen’s Green which makes for a nice backdrop for photographs. The grass beside the bandstand is actually a very quiet area. So on a Saturday, it is a good spot for family pictures.

I also like to make family pictures as natural looking as possible also. I achieve this by asking the guests to walk towards the camera. It gives people something to do so the photographs do not look stiff. Also, I find it makes people smile of their own accord. I came up with this idea on the very first wedding I ever photographed. It makes the pictures more contemporary and natural.

Then it was then on to Fallon & Byrne for a lovely wedding ceremony which included a Celtic hand-fasting ceremony. After the ceremony, we did some pictures in the laneways around Fallon & Byrne to give a mix of the urban and nature to the wedding photographs. Deirdre and Donal were delighted with their wedding photographs. This is one of the most rewarding parts of wedding photography for me.
